Being schooled in the fine arts and having worked commercially in print and styling, characharaboy brings with him a unique blend of illustration, animation, pattern surface design, and textile print. During his time with The Patchwork Family he primarily focuses on telling stories through graphical prints, using fabrics and other repurposed items to enhance his concepts. A consistent element in his work is the incorporation of fictional characters, which he employs to assert, twist, or replicate aspects of our daily and digital reality. By weaving together a variety of related and seemingly unrelated themes, characharaboy creates layered works that tell unorthodox stories while evoking a sense of visual familiarity.
An example of characharaboy's more recent work is his pop-up exhibition “The Tourist Shop,” in which he reclaims the commercial tourist space to benefit local inhabitants and makers once again. Juxtaposing modern stories of the city against common stereotypes and challenging viewers to reconsider their perceptions on a number of social and economic topics. Another notable work is his recycled dress for the Fashion For Goods exhibition "News From The Future," titled Weeskindje van Amsterdam. This piece is a modern reinterpretation of the traditional attire of the Amsterdam Citizen Orphanage, an institution which his grandmother and many others had to call home at times. The dress is constructed from unsold leftovers of previous projects and addresses themes such as individuality, belonging and identity.
