THE PATCHWORK FAMILY

More than sustainable, more than a collective.

The Patchwork Family is an Amsterdam based multidisciplinary collective that empowers emerging designers and creatives through mentorship, collaboration and international platforms, while giving every member complete creative freedom. Founded by a group of fashion graduates, the collective was created to challenge an industry that often asks young creatives to compromise on their values before they can build a career. Instead, The Patchwork Family offers an alternative model where idealism is nurtured through community, shared resources and mutual support.

Inspired by the chosen family structures of drag houses, The Patchwork Family is built on a culture of care rather than competition. While the organisation has a clear structure of mothers, aunts and children, leadership is grounded in mentorship, transparency and democratic decision making. This governance model allows the collective to grow sustainably while remaining responsive to the needs of its members.

Over the past five years, The Patchwork Family has developed into an international platform for interdisciplinary talent. Members have presented work during Amsterdam Fashion Week, Paris Fashion Week, Berlin Fashion Week and London Fashion Week, while collaborating throughout the year with museums, cultural institutions, festivals and nightlife spaces. At the heart of this programme is Family Affair, an ongoing series of immersive performances and fashion experiences that combines upcycled fashion, scenography, performance, sound and community participation. What began as a recurring event in Club Church has grown into one of Amsterdam's most celebrated creative gatherings, culminating in the sold out Grand Family Affair at Paradiso during Amsterdam Fashion Week 2025.

Beyond presenting work, The Patchwork Family functions as an evolving research platform that reimagines how fashion can be created, organised and sustained. Upcycling is approached not only as a material practice, transforming deadstock and post consumer waste into new garments, but as a methodology for rethinking existing systems, cultural formats and business models. The collective believes that ecological, economic and social sustainability are inseparable, and that creating a healthier fashion industry begins with creating healthier ways of working together.

This philosophy extends into Family Business International, the collective's sister company, which develops commercial and cultural projects powered by The Patchwork Family's network of designers, artists and makers. Together they demonstrate that creative work can remain radical, collaborative and financially sustainable without sacrificing its values. Read more here.

Today, The Patchwork Family has grown into an international community of more than 100 designers, performers, musicians, photographers, filmmakers and other interdisciplinary creatives. More than a fashion collective, it is a chosen family built on the belief that collaboration is more powerful than competition, and that fashion can become a tool for cultural change, collective care and more sustainable futures.
